The Complete Peanuts 1975-1976: Volume 13 This was a gift for my dad and I was so excited to find my birth year Cartoons are awesome This has to get five stars because this is, after all, Charles Schulz That said, there are a few things any potential purchaser should know These are sadly all black and white, even the Sundays that were printed in color Luckily, there is a second series of books that contains all the full color Sundays Just search for Peanuts Every Sunday Each volume contains a brief introduction by some famous fan of the strip They re vaguely interesting but I ve never bothered to read any of them all the way through If you re crazy anal as I am note that there are two slightly different versions If you want them all to match on your shelf then take VERY careful note of the exact publisher and edition Finally, take careful note of the evolution of the series The very early strips from the 50s are almost like a totally different strip If buying for a gift, you might consider one of the later books in the series Completists will want them all but if the receiver is on the fence then the 50s isn t the place to start. Volume 13 of The Complete Peanuts 1975 1976 continues the unmatched genius of Charles Schulz Yes there is some silliness in this volume, and yes some of the characters are clueless and seem to lack all common sense, but this is COMIC strip, and comedy it delivers Where else will you see a dog ice skate A talking school building isn t beyond the realm of possibilities in that world. One of the fascinations of this whole series is how reading the strips volume by volume can transport me back in time Early on, Charles Schulz really didn t comment much of the American culture of the time with the exception of sports references here and there At this point in his career, Schulz is including lots of little observations about life as we knew it at the time For example, in Volume 13, reference is made to the pet rock and the mood ring both of which were huge cultural phenomenon at the time Also the love affair Americans had with tennis is demonstrated throughout this volume However, the decline in morals, which had started at this time isn t mentioned. The characters continue their development under our watchful eyes Charlie Brown is even insecure than before if you can believe that.I am constantly taken back to what I was doing when these particular panels were appearing in the daily paper Thank you Charles Schulz for the stroll down memory lane and for creating these tidbits of sanity and silliness for us.I highly recommend. What wonderful storylines are covered in this volume Well, among the many great moments, we have Peppermint Patty leaving school and ending up in dog obedience school We have a suicidal talking schoolhouse We have the first appearance of Snoopy s brother, Spike.Anyone who follows my reviews knows how much I love the Peanuts comic strips The appearance of this series, which will ultimately bring together all the daily strips, is amazing I encourage anyone who loves the series as I do to check out these books. This a great book for fans of Peanuts It contains the adventures of Snoopy as Joe Motocross, heading to Wimbledon for a tennis tournament and winding up in Kansas City meeting his sister Belle and her son Peppermint Patty s house being robbed, going to a dog obedience school, fighting the cat next door World War II, trying to trade Marcie for Snoopy with a broken leg And other Peanut adventures. As The Complete Peanuts Reaches Its Halfway Point, Snoopy S Family Suddenly Expands, Adding A Brother Spike , A Sister Belle , And Even A Nephew Also In This Volume, The Linus Snoopy Truffles Love Triangle, Peppermint Patty S Powder Puff Derby And Obedience School Fiascos, Charlie Brown S Meeting With His Idol Joe Shlabotnik, Marcie S Unwanted Suitor, And The Final Fate Of The Talking Schoolhouse Building Plus An Introduction By SNL Writer, Triumph The Insult Comic Dog Creator, And Lifelong Peanuts Fan Robert Smigel
