This is primarily the story of the people behind the Shale Oil Revolution in the US Over 400 pages it follows the fortunes of the men leading the major oil companies involved in the development of shale gas and shale oil in the US The emphasis is primarily on who did what, when, rather than exactly how they did it Technical details are under explored and rather sketchy Unfortunately, the human interest alone isn t entertaining enough to justify the books length, and much of the book reads like an extended article from Hello magazine It would have been a better book at 250 pages I wanted to know about the details of fracking and horizontal drilling.

  2. bob bob says:

These processes of refracturing and horizontal oil well drilling tecniques is spelled out in this book It, sometimes dramatically, tells how enterprizing, individual, wild cat, oilmen changed the worlds energy balance, and some of the people smart enough to cash in on it This most probably could only happen in USA doesn t matter what your views are on the subject, it s a revealing, interesting read

Excellent book on the history of one of the most important energy stories of our time Readable, and Zuckerman does a great job of highlighting the personalities involved, and the struggles they had to overcome.

  12. Chris Raper Chris Raper says:

Zuckerman has done a nice job at illustrating the tenacity of the unconventional oil and gas visionaries of our time Some went broke, some made it big and all the characters had their own human failings, just like the rest of us I am in the investment business so the names of the characters and the companies were familiar to me the book revealed their personalities I found that interesting All in, it was a really good read and many times I was anxious to get back to it.

I work in oil trading and bought this book as a relevant worthy read I thought it would be dry and technical How wrong I was It bowls along like a Harold Robbins thriller while getting all the technical information a non technical reader needs I have heard a couple of the guys mentioned in it speak at industry events and the writer captures them perfectly A definite five star read The only downside is that I will not sleep tonight until I finish it.
